Beef Tallow
It all begins with an idea.
I have a problem with complaining I am too busy all the time and then picking up a new project and that’s what happened here. I have been wanting to simplify our food and the products in our lives ever since having our first son. I have done a ton of research on beef tallow and the benefits of using it for cooking oil, skin care, candles, soaps etc. When we processed our first steers to sell by the cut, I asked for all of the suet fat (internal fat that is around the main organs) back to try to make my own tallow products. All of the tallow products you purchase from Powell Farms are made from our steers. The same ones you purchase for beef. I render the tallow down 4-5 times and then depending on what I am using it for I will mix it with essential oils and jojoba oil for our whipped tallow balm, mix it with pure beeswax for lip balms, mix it with essential oils and pour candles or leave it pure. The benefits and uses are endless with tallow and something that our whole family uses every day!
Tallow is an amazing product that is:
Nutrient-dense: Tallow is a good source of vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12, as well as choline. These vitamins are easily absorbed by the body and can help with immune function, bone health, and eye health.
Anti-inflammatory: Tallow contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a fatty acid that can help reduce inflammation and support the immune system. Tallow also contains oleic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties.
Gut health: Tallow contains butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid that can help support gut health by reducing inflammation and promoting a healthy microbiome.
Improved digestion: Tallow contains lipases, enzymes that can help with fat digestion and absorption.
Brain health: Tallow may help improve cognition and brain health.
Hair health: Tallow can help reduce an itchy scalp, smooth frizz, and condition, hydrate, and soften dry hair.
Skin health: Tallow can help stimulate collagen production and skin cell renewal.
Sustainable: Tallow is a byproduct of cattle farming and requires no extra resources.
All of our tallow products can be picked up at the store or shipped anywhere in the US!
Smoked Beef Ribs
So, I am going to be honest with you guys. You aren’t going to get a whole story about how I grew up and my grandma cooked such and such and the whole nine yards story before every recipe I post. One reason is I have a full-time job, and two wild boys, so I do not have time to give you the whole family history. Second reason is I hate scrolling for five minutes before I ever come to the recipe, so I’ll save you the time if you are like me.
This is a great way to use those beef ribs you bought from Powell Farms and aren’t sure what to do with. These can be smoked on a regular grill, a pellet grill (which is what we use) or in your oven. You won’t get the smoke flavor in your oven but still an option if you don’t have a grill.
